About Gabri Christa

Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles, born and raised Gabri Christa brings to her filmmaking and directing her background as a choreographer and performer. Now based in New York, (via Havana, Amsterdam and) she has received many awards for her Choreographies and Short Films including a Guggenheim Fellowship for her choreography.

Of her directing Jennifer Dunning in the New York Times said: Something happens in Gabri Christa’s Dominata, that can not be said for many great dances today…she transforms the theater and transports you …she directs without seeming lifting a finger”. In 2008 Gabri Christa was invited to the Pangea Day Film Festival as “One of the World’s 100 most promising Filmmakers”. Her film “High School” received an ABC TV award for Creative excellence.

Gabri Christa her films have screened as Jury finalists in festivals in Tokyo, Atlanta, Denver and in Screen Dance festivals in Los Angeles, London, Amsterdam, New York (Lincoln Center), Monaco, Munich, Capetown, Shanghai, Kumming, Being as well as in Musea and Galleries.

Her choreography has been performed among others in Latin America, Europe, the Caribbean several US cities and in New York at Central Park Summer Stage, Dance Theater Workshop (5 seasons) PS 122, Symphony Space, Aaron Davis Hall (Harlem Stage), St. Marks Church, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Center For the Arts at CUNY/CSI, and Judson Church.

As a performer she was among others, a dance member of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba and DanzAbierta de Cuba (directed by Marianela Boan) of which she was one of the co-founders. Gabri Christa ‘s ongoing projects include Dance Conduction Continuum a Conduction Improvisation ensemble she co-directs with Germaul Barnes.

She has been a contributing author to “Caribbean Dance from Abakua to Zouk” a de la Torre Bueno Price winning book, and has written for “Scholar & Feminist”, a Journal published by Barnard College. She has also published writings on Dance, Art and social topics in the Netherlands as recently as 2009 in a trajectory that started with broadcasting for Radio Netherlands World Wide (Radio Nederlands Wereld Omproep).

Gabri Christa has taught dance and lectured at Princeton University, Manhattanville College, Unversity of Michigan, University of Washington, Fordham University, University of Utah, Barnard College Dance Department, and African Studies, Bates Dance Festival, Summers Stages Dance Festival. She is on the faculty of CUNY (City University of New York) College of Staten Island, Performing and Creative Arts Department.

Gabri Christa holds a BA from the College of the Arts, School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and a MFA from the University of Washington.

Her service to the dance field, include 8 years on the board of Dance Theater Workshop NY (2002-2010) Advisory Board of Dance/ NYC, juror on several grant and fellowship committees. She frequently adjudicates for ACDFA’s (American College Dance Festival Association) choreography competition.

She is a member of SAG (Screen Actors Guild) WMM (Women Make Movies) and New York Women in Film and Television (NYWFT) and the Dance Film Association.
